Ask Tom

Senior Inspector Tom Berardelli answers common questions associated with the results of home inspections.

Question: Is it safe to use Clorox for laundry if you have a septic system?

Tom Berardelli: Clorox is harmful to the septic because the cleaning agent kills the bacteria necessary for the decomposition of waste solids. This puts the system at risk for blockages and back-ups.  In addition, you should not introduce grease or cigarette butts into your system for the same reason. Before putting any product in your septic, make sure to check the label to see whether it is septic safe or biodegradable.

Wood Destroying Insects  Mold in Basement

Spring is coming, and, for real estate professionals, the warm weather brings not only scores of home buyers but also the threat of wood destroying insects.  In a natural setting, these insects serve a indispensable function by recycling dead trees into organic matter. Unfortunately, wood destroying insects aren't aware that the wood components in homes don't need to be recycled!

In order to better understand the damage these creatures can do to a home, Realty Inspection Services has provided a pest profile for each of the three groups: Powder Post Beetles, Termites, and Carpenter Ants.  Our inspection searches of evidence for all three types and determines whether the infestation is active or not.

A recent article (January 24 Home & Real Estate section) in the Democrat and Chronicle explained the process for a first-time home buyer looking to buy the right home. A number of steps were appropriately defined:
